A MAN who racially abused two staff and performed a Nazi salute in a Chepstow supermarket was ordered to pay compensation to his victims by the courts.

Richard Allan Swift, 32, of Middle Way, Chepstow, shouted 'Sieg heil' and raised his arm after he was asked to leave Lidl, in Bulwark on the afternoon of July 23.

Cwmbran Magistrates Court heard how an Indian member of staff became his first victim after she asked him to leave as he was banned from the store.

Prosecutor Rob Simkins said Swift called her a "black ****" and said "go back to your country you bitch" as she approached.

The woman pressed the emergency button to alert the manager, who Swift also turned on, calling him a "nigger" and a "paki."

Mr Simkins, who asked magistrates to upgrade the sentence as it was racially aggravated, said the language was very offensive and caused the victims real distress.

In interview, Swift told police officers he remembered getting into an argument with the staff, swearing and telling them to get out of his country, but he was not racist.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of racially aggravated harassment and the court heard he has four previous convictions for public disorder since 1997.

Defending, Paul Morris said Swift suffers from schizophrenia and part of his behaviour in recent years has been a direct result of the illness.

He said his client had taken too much valium on the day of the incident and reacted abruptly when approached.

"He will have to suffer the embarrassment of his name being published in the local paper," he added.

Swift was fined a total of £310, £110 for the offence, £50 for each victim, £85 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

He will also have to comply with a community order imposed for a previous offence.
