THOUSANDS of people are due to attend the 32nd Annual Vintage Rally for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research at Newport's Tredegar House and Park on Sunday September 16.

The event will take place from 10.30am to 5.30pm. There will be more than 1,500 exhibits of vintage and classic cars at the event, including Ford Model Ts from the 1900s and Cadillacs from the eighties.

The rally will also feature a sheep dog display, a working craft marquee, children's amusements, trade stands and side shows.

An American Civil War and a World War two encampment will be set up alongside military vehicles from the past.

The event was started when Gwent woman Mandy Womack lost her six-year-old son Timothy to leukaemia. She set up the event in his memory to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the only UK charity which is exclusively dedicated to funding research into blood cancers.

Imelda Wood and her husband Roger have helped to organise the event for the past 18 years.

Mrs Wood said: "It started off with just 68 cars in 1980, and it was very small. But it seems to grow each year. Interest in the rally never seems to wane. This year we're hoping for good weather, obviously, as the amount we raise does depend on the amount of people who come along."

"On the day we do rely on a lot of volunteers. They come year after year and generously give their time, and we couldn't do it without them."

"Whatever we raise on the day goes straight to the charity, no-one takes expenses or anything like that."
