A NEWPORT park is one of only three in Wales to be short-listed to win a makeover in a nationwide competition.

Brecon Park in St Julian's could win a £33,000 transformation after residents entered the Flora Playground competition and was one of 36 to be shortlisted last week.

The newly-formed group Friends of Brecon Park are hoping to give the area a new lease of life by replacing old play equipment, buying benches and creating a wildlife area.

Chairwoman, Nicola Somerville,36 of Brecon Road, said: "We want to transform the park into an attractive area where our children can play and the elderly can come and sit."

"With the help of Newport City Council and the community charity Groundwork we entered the competition and were over the moon to be shortlisted," added the mum-of-three.

The group is holding a fun day at the park between midday and 4pm on September 22.

Voting for the competition can only be done through the social networking site Facebook by September 30.

The park that receives the most votes wins the cash.
