NEWPORT adventurer Richard Parks received an honourary fellowship from the University of Wales, Newport yesterday.
The former Wales and Newport Gwent Dragons player completed a world first when he summated seven mountains and three poles in seven months last year as part of the 737 Challenge.
He described the fellowship has a "real honour" and said it was a special day for him and his family.Mr Parks said: "I am very proud of my connection with Newport and it is a real honour and privilege to have been recognised by the University of Wales, Newport."
He added: "This recognition is not just for me but for everyone who has worked so hard and supported my challenge."
The Marie Curie Cancer Care fundraiser was honoured for his charity work and his commitment to the area. The university's acting vice-chancellor, Professor Stephen Hagen, said: "Richard's remarkable achievement and exceptional fundraising efforts make him a strong force for good in the world."
West End star Caroline Sheen and former university chaplain Father Mark Soady will receive their honourary fellowships from the university today.
