AN ABERGAVENNY dog was named international show champion at a competition in Germany.

Maltby, a five-year-old Hungarian Vizsla, is believed to be the only dog of his breed in the UK to win international show champion status, which he achieved at the Ludwidshafen Show last month.

The five-year-old was bred by owners John and Annabel Herbert, of Great Hardwick, near Abergavenny, at the Cantenac Kennels.

His father is the renowned Yogi, who won Crufts in 2010, and his mother is Dallandor Volante, a highly intelligent gundog who is bred to hunt and can retrieve game or birds into separate piles of cocks and hens.

The couple, who have three Hungarian Vizslas, have been breeding them for eight years, but Maltby is the first to get his own passport and travel across Europe. Last year he won at shows in Holland and Belgium.

“It is a stupendous achievement,” said Mr Herbert. “Maltby was recognised as the best in Europe and among the best in the world.”

The couple now plan to offer Malty for stud and can be contacted via cantenac@live.co.uk
