WALES' first drive through supermarket has opened in Newport.

The Spytty Road Tesco Extra store now offers a drive-through service allowing shoppers to pick up their shopping without even having to leave their cars.

The Spytty store and a Tesco Extra store in Swansea are the first of the supermarket chain's stores in Wales to offer the service.

Shoppers order their groceries online, choose the Click and Collect option and decide on a two-hour collection slot which are available seven days a week.

They can then collect their shopping any time within those two hours from the separate Click and Collect unit at the store's car park.

Shoppers pull into the drive-through collection point, show staff their reference details and staff bring out the shopping.

Spytty store manager Rob Hughes said: "We are very excited to be able to offer this new service to our customers. I speak to them every day about their shopping experience and this new drive-through will now offer even more choice in how they buy their shopping."

The service is the same as home delivery orders with a minimum £2 charge added to the bill.

The scheme was first trialled at stores in Baldock and Romford and is currently being rolled out to 120 stores across the UK.

Newport school children are now being asked to design artwork for a special shopping bag to help promote the new service.

What an exciting story and addition to Newport. Something to be proud of right there.

Who needs the regeneration of the city centre when we can now go shopping without having to walk a single step? Then, with minimal physical exertion, on to a fast food emporium (drive though of course) to celebrate another cultural high point.

It's a good job Wales doesn't have one of the highest obesity rates in Europe isn't it?

Your missing the point Forename Surname. I think this will benefit the elderly and disabled more than anything.

I'm not a fan of Tesco but they deserve credit for their innovation.

If its anything like the rest of the service at Spytty Road, it will come with a free poke in the eye.

i have every sympathy for the genuine disabled but the vast majority of those claiming to be disabled are just swigging the lead!! out running marathons, scuba diving, boxing on sky tv, even the strongest man in Cornwall claimed to be disabled
