PUPILS at Torfaen’s newest and most expensive school showed off the new facilities at its official opening yesterday.
Youngsters at Blaenavon Heritage Voluntary Controlled Primary School performed a medley of songs including Calon Lan and their own school anthem to the delight of governors, Torfaen mayor Wayne Tomlinson and Education Minister Leighton Andrews, among others.
Guests then enjoyed a tour of the £13 million campus, which is kitted out with the top technological devices including iPads, touchscreen white boards and a fully equipped TV recording studio.
Its state-of-the-art active living centre has a fitness suite and outdoor games area, which is open for use by the community after teaching hours.
Pupils moved into the school, which can accommodate 450 youngsters, back in April following the closure of St Peter’s Primary and Hillside Primary and nursery schools. Head teacher Deb Woodward told visitors that the new school, with its top technologies, would raise standards in English and maths and inspire generations of children to come to achieve their goals.
She said: “We have seen Blaenavon move through an industrial revolution and now a technological revolution, with our school at the heart of it.”
Building work on the next phase of the complex is due to begin later this year and will eventually include a doctors’ practice, dentist and opticians.
