A TEENAGER was hospitalised after allegedly taking the drug Mephedrone, police said today.

Gwent Police have not yet said when the 15-year-old from Cwmbran is said to have taken the drug, but confirmed he has now been discharged from hospital.

The force are warning others of the dangers of the Class B drug, also known as Meow Meow.

It was previously sold as a legal alternative to cocaine and amphetamine, but was it made illegal to posses or supply in April 2010.

It is a fine white, or off white, crystalised powder that makes users feel euphoric, very alert and talkative. But it can make some some users feel anxious and paranoid.

The long term side effects are still largely unknown, but the drug is very addictive.

Inspector Nick McLain, of Torfaen Local Policing Unit, said: "There are some serious side effects to using Meow Meow - these can include heart attack, seizures, sweating and paranoia.

"Apart from the health dangers, being caught in possession of meow meow could mean up to a five year jail sentence."

I trust the idiot has been charged and will be prosecuted...Some chance....Naughty boy..Try not to do it again...Was he/parents made to pay for Medical Services...Of course not....Whilst he was attended to, some other person in genuine need of precious medical services was made to wait!!.

All drugs are dangerous, including legal ones like alcohol. Doubt that a drunk 15 year old getting their stomach pumped makes the news much though.

don't be silly - comments like this are totally irresponsible & do no good at all - we're talking about chemicals (some in the form of plant food) that haven't been tested on the effects on humans & being ingested by children! Suppose now we'll have the usual comments of setting good example to the young - like 'drugs not dangerous lets legalise!'

Oh, won't somebody please think of the children...

If you'd care to read my comment again, you'll notice the first sentence is "All drugs are dangerous"

Pretending that the latest illegal drug is so much more noteworthy than the other drugs out there is what's truly irresponsible and doing no good at all.

A better question would be "Why does this 15 year old have so little going on in his life that he feels the need to get off his face on untested chemicals?"

you seem to condone this drug & do not care for the younger generation - its probably this attitude that the source of the problem. All drugs maybe dangerous but some more dangerous than others (as shown), the long term side affect unknown. Q. how does a 15 year old get access? - such a liberal attitude - scary!
