A MUM of two who confused Newport’s world famous transporter bridge with one in her home town of Middlesbrough will make the 300-mile journey to Wales to take part in a charity abseil.

Rachel Cook, 28, will drive from her home in Redcar to Newport for the St David’s Foundation event early this morning (Saturday).

Mrs Cook, who works part-time in an electrical store, thought she was signing up for an abseil off the transporter bridge in Middlesbrough, just a few miles from her home.

She said: "I’ve always wanted to do an abseil from the transporter bridge, and when I Googled it, the charity abseil for St David’s came up. When I saw what an amazing cause it was, I signed up straight away.

It was only a few days later when I was doing some research that the penny finally dropped.

"But once I decide to do something I don’t go back on my word.

"I have done an abseil before so I think I will be alright. I’m more worried about the five and a half hour car journey there and back to be honest.

"I’ve read up about St David’s Hospice Care and the marvellous work that they do, and know that it is a really fantastic charity. So now I’m really pleased that I’m able to do my little bit for them even though it was a bit a mistake."

Once Mrs Cook has done the abseil, the family will pile back in the car for another five and a half hour journey back home so she can make it to work on time on Sunday morning.

Kris Broome, Director of Fundraising and Lottery at St David’s Hospice Care, said: "We’re urging anyone who wants to abseil from the largest transporter bridge in the world to sign up now without delay as there only a few places left."

The event starts at 9am on September 15. Entry costs £10. For more details or to register, call Kris Broome on 01633 851058 or visit www.stdavidsfoundation.co.uk
