TREDEGAR’S Paralympic hero, Mark Colbourne, will be honoured by a homecoming parade in the town, arranged by the town council.

The golden boy will be welcomed back on Saturday, September 29, with a homecoming ceremony that is to start at 11am at the Bevan Memorial Stones and will give local residents and other visitors the chance to see the Paralympian as he is driven through the town in an opentop bus.

The bus will go past the Tredegar town clock and the newly painted gold postbox, which was awarded to the town following his success, as Paracyclist Mark won both gold and silver medals during the Paralympic Games.

At 11am the open-top bus will depart from the Bevan Memorial Stones before going down Beaufort Road to the bypass, along to the Crown roundabout, down Ashvale and Sycamore Avenue and on through Stockton Way (the Dram Road).

There will then be a loop of the one-way system through the underpass at Gwent Shopping Centre, and along Commercial Street, with a stop at the gold postbox to take photographs.

The bus will then be parked at the bus stop in front of Lidl, followed by another trip through the underpass to the town clock so that Mark can speak to the crowds.

The event is expected to end at the clock around noon.

Malcolm Cross, leader of Tredegar Town Council, said: “It’s great we can now let the rest of Tredegar know the homecoming plans that we’ve had in place for Mark. He is a fantastic role model and deserves recognition for his breath-taking performances at the Games.”

Alun Davies, AM, said: “What Mark has achieved is an inspiration to all of us. I call on everyone who can to try and make it to the homecoming event, to show him how proud we are of him.”
