Sickness outbreak at Newport nursery

CHILDREN have become ill with sickness and diarrhoea at a private nursery in Newport.

Newport City Council has confirmed it was informed on Tuesday, with 23 cases of illness reported so far.

The council's environmental health officers are investigating with Public Health Wales, and based on symptoms which have been reported they suspect it could be viral gastroenteritis.

Such outbreaks are not unusual, especially at this time of year, said a spokeswoman for Newport Council .

The cases were reported a week after 74 people at Newport's Hilton Hotel were struck down by suspected norovirus.

It is important that anyone with vomiting or diarrhoea should not return to work or school for 48 hours after their last symptoms as gastrointestinal illnesses like this are easily passed from person to person.

Public Health Wales has advised that anyone who has been unwell with diarrhoea or vomiting for more than 48 hours should contact their GP or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Which nursery is this? Why is it all the stories on sickness outbreak's are missing important information? Is the sickness from the leisure centre, nursery and hotel linked?

These days you get very little information. Usually a council spokesman says.

Surely the location of this outbreak should be spelled out if its a matter of public health. There was no time wasted in highlighting the Hilton hotel so what's so special about this location that its not being released?

I can't quite understand the point of informing us about this latest outbreak? unless I am completely missing the point, why is this a matter of public health concern? viruses circulate all the time and tend to peak around this time of year, nothing outstanding about that, unless Newport is experiencing a particularly bad period at this time. which recent reports would tend to indicate, but the bug at the leisure centre was not the same as the one at the Hilton, according to reports, or is there something else going on that we are not being told, are the cases linked?why only give us half the information, and then we naturally speculate, would it not be better to present all the facts at once?

just wanted to add, very often the problem is too many people do return to work/nursery/school before they should when they are still infectious and this just adds to the problem, there needs to be much better awareness of this, and employers have to give people at least 48hrs off work and that is not open to debate.Just to be provocative I bet part of the problem with the nursery and the Hilton was that people were returning before they should have. The thing is too many of us are afraid to take too much time off work these days.

it all comes down to cleaning , and hygiene, you cant beat a good old bleach to kill germs and bacteria DEAD . Let people use the products that do the job , you only get what you pay for and its been proven that cheaper products dont do it , how many claims will the council have to settle with the outbreak in the leisure centre , yes i know that was a different strain of virus , but again it all comes down to cleaning and products used for the job .

I expect the Health and Safety brigade have created this as many places have banned the use of good old Bleach on safety grounds.
