"A valued and much-loved" member of a Newport school’s staff has been found dead.

Police were called to Caerleon Lodge Hill Infants School, Newport, at 1.50pm on Thursday, following a report that a man in his 60s had been found dead.

A police statement, read: "The man was found in an area of the building not accessed by pupils. We are not treating his death as suspicious."

A spokeswoman for Newport council on behalf of the school, said: "A valued and much-loved member of the school staff died. He will be much missed by everyone at both the infants and junior schools.

"Our sympathies are with his family at this time.

"It was decided the schools should remain open as it is important routines are kept as normal as possible while allowing adults and children to grieve in their own way and in their own time.

"Staff, governors and the city council are working closely together and professional support is being provided for anyone who needs it at the schools.

"At this moment, the priority is to help the school community through this difficult time. The schools will be passing their condolences to the family who are very much in our thoughts and prayers at this time."
