A FRIEND will take on the challenge of a lifetime in memory of a mum who lost her battle with cancer at the age of 26.

Peter Green, 33, from Caldicot, hopes to raise £2,500 for cancer charity Marie Curie by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, after his friend’s sister, Laura Marshall Reid, died in January 2011.

Mum-of-two Mrs Marshall Reid, from Rogiet, fought valiantly against the disease after being diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2009.

The former Wilkinson’s warehouse worker worked through a wishlist of things she wanted to do before she died, including marrying her fiancé Gareth, in December 2009, revisiting Disneyland Paris, and staying in a Scottish log cabin in the snow.

The devoted mum also made a memory box for her two boys, Liam and Jack, which they will open when they are older.

It is filled with letters, cards and keepsakes to remember her by.

Mr Green, a family friend of Mrs Marshall Reid, will now fulfil one of his dreams by taking on the 10-day challenge in June, after being encouraged to do so by his fiance, Jessica Andrews, 20. “I’ve never fundraised before. I want to do something that’s worthwhile and I could look back on,” he said.

He was touched by Laura’s battle. “Being told she was terminally ill was a big shock,” he said.

Mr Green is raising funds for Marie Curie because of their care to terminally ill people in their own homes, something Laura received.

“Having her come home was of great importance to her family,” he said.

“I want to do light-hearted things to fundraise, as I think Laura would approve. She would probably be looking down and think I was a bit of an idiot!”

The mission to raise £2,500 plus costs starts now. Mr Green is planning events like dressing up as a daffodil and walking on a treadmill in Caldicot.

An open mic night at Rogiet Non Political Club, on November 17, at 7.30pm is the first event organised.
