THE death of a man in Newport is being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commision after police had been called to a burglary at the property hours before.

Gwent police were called to Ailesbury Street, at around 2.20pm on Tuesday following the discovery of the body of a 60-year-old man.

But a Gwent police spokeswoman said a burglary was reported at the same address at 4.20am that day.

Police attended to make enquires and made attempts to speak to the occupant of the property but they could get no response at the time.

Police visited the property again at 8am but again could not get any response.

The spokeswoman said the matter is in the process of being referred to the IPCC.

The death of the man is currently being treated as unexplained and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Officers now removing items from house in brown bags. Forensic officers are packing up for the night.

 


UPDATE: 9.11pm - Man found dead

A Gwent Police spokesman said police attended the scene after a 60 year old man was found dead. His death is currently being treated as unexplained.

 


UPDATE: 9.04pm

Neighbours say police and forensics arrived at around 4.30am today.

A 22 year old man living near the scene said when he was walking to work at 4.50am there were around ten police cars in the street and surrounding area.

 


UPDATE: 8.45pm

Police and forensics officers are currently at the scene of an incident in Ailesbury Street, Crindau, Newport.

An officer is standing guard outside a house, and although police have so far released no details of the incident, they are describing the situation as "suspicious".
