Cwmcarn High School closed in asbestos probe

First published in News

Cwmcarn High School closed today while an asbestos investigation is carried out, Caerphilly County Borough Council said today.

In a statement, the council said: “Due to a structural report which has been received today, the Authority is taking immediate and decisive action to safeguard the health and wellbeing of pupils and staff at the school.

“As of today the school building will be closed for further detailed asbestos investigation. Although we appreciate that this action will cause concern and inconvenience to parents, I am sure you will appreciate that the safety of pupils and staff at the school is of paramount importance.

"The school will be closed until further notice and we will communicate with you any further updates with regard to the investigation and the arrangements for the pupils.”

I have three children at Cwmcarn High School, two weeks ago parts of the building were closed off due to asbestos. No letters were received from the school today and all the children were told was the school could be closed. Still at this time no information is on the school website. This has been handled really terribly! If alternate arrangements are made, I hope they take into account putting siblings and friends together, as I know a lot of children are very worried about where they will be placed!

Work has been going on in the school for a while, i find it disgusting that the school cannot communicate such vital info to the pupils or parents. I myself had to find out via facebook. Our children may well have already been exposed, why start work during term time, surley school hols are an ideal opportunity to carry out essential maintence.

I can agree with all the comments made. Work has been undergoing for asbestos in one of the departments in the school for just over 2 weeks now and no communication to parents at home. I personally only found out about this through Facebook again. On the school website it says the headteacher found out at 2:45. Surly this is enough time to call a whole school assemble for the last 10 minutes of school? It also says it is in the best of pupils interest... well cant they work on the weekend to get it sorted?

Thoroughly disgusted with the school over this. My son literally only just found out about it because I spotted it on Facebook. He rang his mother, and considering how serious this is, neither of us had been contacted. Were they gonna wait til the kids get to school monday morning and start turning them away? Resulting in parents having to leave work at a moments notice?

I think the school has done really well, by the time my son was home from school there was a notice from Caerphilly Council on their home page and first thing this morning there was a letter from the school explaining all. Extremely efficient in my book!

I worked there in 1987 and it needed refurbishing then but the skl needs to inform parents about how long the children have been exposed to it and if staff and pupils need to be checked out.
The skl used to have a really good reputation but it has gone downhill the last few years.
I hope it is sorted out asap.
