CWMCARN gymnastics club have also been hit by the closure of Cwmcarn High School, which also closed the nearby leisure centre.

The club’s 110 members will not be able to use their usual facilities "until further notice" after being told they couldn’t enter the gym when they turned up for Friday’s practice session.

One of the club’s coaches, Jo Hopper from Cwmfelinfach, said: "We are a bit worried because we can’t get in to get our register to tell all the parents that the sessions aren’t happening."

The club’s specialist apparatus is also locked inside with no time frame on when they might regain access to it.

The club run three recreational sessions a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and have more competitive gymnasts who train four times a week at the facility, with members ranging from 3-15-years-old across the club.

The recreational sessions will now be moved to Newbridge Leisure Centre starting from October 27, with the Monday class running from 11-12, Thursdays 12-1 and Friday’s 1-2.

But the club are still desperately hunting for a permanent venue for the competition squad, six of whom are due to take part in a competition in Swansea on Saturday but will now be short of practice.

Ms Hopper, said: "We’ve been told by the council we can’t go in until further notice.

"We completely understand that the council’s main priorities are health and safety and the getting the children back to education but it is a bit of a worry that we have more than 100 active children now not doing any exercise.

"We had a crisis meeting of sorts on Monday night and hence announcing that the recreational sessions will be at Newbridge but because of the equipment the competition group need it is all still very up in the air."

If you have queries about the sessions please contact Newbridge Leisure Centre and leave a message for the club.
