RISCA Post Office will shut for the last time tomorrow, the Argus has learned.

A Post Office spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that the Tredegar Street branch will close, despite an ongoing consultation to incorporate its services into the nearby Spar store.

The branch employs four members of staff, including a temporary sub-postmistress.

Spokesman Stuart Taylor said: “Unfortunately the premises is being taken away from us by the owner and we are very sorry we are having to temporarily close the branch.

“We are looking to speed up a consultation exercise to move the post office into the Spar and aim to make the period of closure as short as possible.”

The nearest alternative post offices to the Tredegar Street branch in Risca are at the Exchange, St Mary’s Street; Ty Sign post office on Elm Drive in Ty Sign; and Crosskeys Post Office.

Caerphilly County Borough councillor for Risca East, Stan Jenkins, said that despite there being a smaller post office in Ty Sign, where he lives, he often used the Risca branch.

“It’s our main post office,” said Cllr Jenkins.

“I’ve lived in Risca for 30 years and it’s been there as long as Risca has. It is a blow for those who use it, they will have to travel further now.”
