So the girl who was head and shoulders above anyone else won “X-Factor”, but as you would expect it’s not to everyone’s liking.
I played Alexandra Burke’s version of “Hallelujah” on my show last Sunday and I think she’s done a decent job of it.
However, I then read of a campaign being organised through Facebook (where else) to stop the song becoming number 1 at Christmas by getting people to download Jeff Buckley’s version, which is considered by many to be one of the best of the hundreds of versions that have been recorded.
I’m quite partial to a bit of Mr.Buckley although he could get a little dour at times. He is though, one of those artists who, having sadly died far too young has taken on an almost mythical status.
I think it’s because of this that those who consider themselves to be the guardians of our musical taste have decided to take umbrage at the very thought of this song being sung by an “X-Factor” winner.
To paraphrase a famous comedy catchphrase, how very dare she.
The strange thing is that the song’s been covered by all and sundry over the years, featured on ads, TV shows and movies.
It’s only now though that the chosen few have decided to take gross offence on our behalf.
Good thing though as it means the rest of us can get on with other things like, oh I don’t know, life.
You know the great thing about music is that everyone’s taste is different for lots of reasons. It doesn’t necessarily mean that anyone else’s is better than yours; it’s just not the same.
No use getting all flustered about it, that’s just the way it is.
Happy Christmas.
