If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

Lots of people spring to mind but I think I'd have to say Richard Pryor. For me he was the greatest comedian of all time, and a wonderful storyteller too.

What is your biggest fear?

I don't really have any particular fears, though I'm afraid of regretting not doing things. I think fears such be motivating, wherever possible - something to overcome.

Do you have any superstitions?

I only submit my writing to publishers when I'm listening to Elvis Presley!

If you could have one song on your iPod, what would it be and why?

Without doubt Mr Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan. It’s a song that means a lot to me and it's just a lyrical masterpiece - I'd take this song for the last verse alone.

What's the most expensive thing you've bought not including your property?

I've not really bought many expensive objects. I did a tour of Israel and Palestine earlier this year, and I spent more on that than I have on anything else. It was worth every penny though.

What is the best piece of advice you've been given?

‘Don't use so many adjectives.’ Its great advice for writing but it's also a good lesson for life - be straight, be simple and be true.

What's your indulgence?

I dedicate a lot of time to my writing, so that's my great passion. I'm also quite partial to black beer and red meat!

What item could you not live without?

I don't own too many items or objects, but I guess some form of writing tool, so maybe a notebook or a typewriter - something to capture life with.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

I wish I could sing, and I mean like, really sing. Like Sam Cooke. If I could sing like that I doubt I'd do very much else.

Where are you next going on holiday?

I've always felt a deep affinity for Southern Spain, so I'd like to go back to Granada or Seville in the spring – the contrasts of Christian, Islamic and Jewish cultures there is beautiful.
