WHEN I was first elected, a former MP once told me it is important to take some time out from the political world once in a while. If someone was to ask me where the best place to do that I would answer straight away – Cwmcarn Forest Drive.

Anyone who has the opportunity to visit there, cannot help but be captivated by the enchanting forest which leads to some of the most spectacular views of both England and Wales.

For the more adventurous there is a fishing lake, the famous downhill mountain bike trails and plenty of places to set up camp for the night.

Among the various attractions, children can have a go on a large team swing, get a different perspective on life by trying out the gravity bowl or be mesmerised by the various wood carvings.

Just recently, I was there to witness the opening of 15km of new bike trails – there really is there something for all the family.

It is not difficult to see why Cwmcarn Forest Drive was recently named as one of the most visited tourist attractions in Wales.

It is really is place which has given people of all ages throughout the country so many fond and happy memories.

That is why like many others I was saddened to hear the forest drive will close on November 2 so that more than 150,000 diseased larch trees can be cut down. While the cycle paths and the visitor centre will remain open so many constituents have got in touch to express concerns about whether the road will ever reopen.

A number of people have criticised the decision, with thousands of people signing an e-petition.

They are worried the drive might never reopen.

Having received so many emails, letters and phone calls, I wrote to Natural Resources Wales, who run the attraction, seeking assurances about the road. They told me they aim to restore and improve the forest. I was told the long-term plan is to replant other trees on the site once the ground is ready and to eventually reinstate the road.

I am keen to ensure this attraction will continue to work to ensure that Cwmcarn Forest Drive is enjoyed by many people for years to come. I know how important this place is.

I will do all that I can to ensure the road is reopened as soon as possible.
