If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

Vivian Maier, the photographer. So little was known about her life, yet her photographs are so evocative. It amazes me how such genius could remain undiscovered for so long.

Universal censorship. I had such a long career as a journalist, so I value the freedom of speech.

Do you have any superstitions?

Yes, all of them. Everything from not walking under ladders to collecting stones with holes in them. You name a superstition, I’ll be up for it.

If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Gabriel Fauré – Pavane. It has a lot of good memories.

A Jeep Cherokee around seven or eight years ago.

Fear not but the Lord, which my aunt Daisy told me.

Solitude, as it’s the greatest luxury in life to be out and about with the dogs.

I would like to be less tolerant as I think we have reached the stage in the world that no-one can make forthright decisions.

Arizona in the spring. Most of my relatives are American or Canadian, so it will be a family thing.
