IT has been an eventful week, to say the least. There is a lot of uncertainty and speculation swirling around.

We are in unchartered territory.

This is a time to unite and work together to ensure that we get the best deal possible for Wales.

Our priority has to be to ensure that Welsh jobs, our communities and our public services are protected. Cast iron promises have been made by the Leave campaign to ensure that Wales would not lose out if we left the EU.

This week, the First Minister Carwyn Jones has written to the Prime Minister to ask him to confirm that every penny of the funding is safe.

Stabilising the economy and ensuring there is a limited impact on jobs and workers’ rights is vital.

That is why I visited Airbus in Newport on Friday morning to discuss how they see the future - with the key goal of safeguarding investment and how the Welsh Government can help.

I will be visiting other businesses and voluntary groups in the coming weeks and months to do the same.

We must now move forward positively, learn lessons, respect each other’s views and heal divisions where they have emerged. Whether you voted to remain or to leave the EU we must do everything in our power to protect Welsh interests and strengthen our economy. We all want a prosperous Newport and Wales.

On a brighter note, the Welsh football team have been doing fantastically well at the European Championships. Many of us have waited a long time to see it.

The team have already done us proud, and as a fellow former pupil of St Julians School it’s great to see Chris Gunter, as well as another Newportonian, James Collins doing so well.

Well done to Newport City Council, Newport Live and Rodney Parade who’ve organised a Fanzone for us all to cheer on the team on Friday night.

It is important to me that elected representatives work together in the interests of their communities.

Next week I will be holding an Advice Surgery with our Police and Crime Commissioner, Jeff Cuthbert to listen to residents on problems around anti social behaviour.

It will be at the Pill Millennium Centre from 12.30pm to 2pm on FridayJuly 8.

Please come along if you would to like to raise an issue with either me or Jeff.
