This time of year is one of remembrance. Sunday was of course Remembrance Sunday, a moving and important occasion across the country.

I am always honoured to attend the Newport service, to remember and reflect on the losses of those who died and suffered through war.

I will also be honoured to attend the Merchant Navy parade and Commemoration at 11.30 on Saturday November 16th at the Seafarers Monument, marking the bravery and loss of life of those who served.

Taking time to remember the sacrifice and suffering of so many people reminds us of the human cost of war and the importance of peace. We honour the memory of those who have died, and hope for a better and more peaceful future.

- In Newport there are further acts of memorial in November remembering our Chartist history, with a series of events taking place. Along with many others, I attend the annual Chartists' Commemoration at St Woolos Cathedral on November 4. It is both an act of remembrance and an occasion to honour the values and principles of the Movement. It fought for democracy and freedom, which was denied to the working class. Chartists in Newport paid for these values with their lives, and it is important to remember them.

But these values are living ones, they have endured and still influence politics today. Paving the way for votes for the masses, their work was carried on by future generations to establish the democracy we take for granted today. Following the loss of the mural we must ensure the work in-hand leads to a fitting memorial as an important part of Newport continuing to honour its Chartist history and legacy.

- Only the most organised people will have done much preparation for Christmas yet, but one organisation that has is the Trade Union USDAW. The Union represents shop workers, and is once again preparing to highlight their ‘Freedom From Fear’ campaign which campaigns against abuse and even violence against shop staff. Swearing, violence or disrespect is just not acceptable and no staff should have to suffer it.

As Christmas approaches we’ll see some of the busiest shopping days of the year but, no matter how stressful it gets, there is no excuse for rude or criminal behaviour. USDAW’s campaign is about respect, and I very much support it.
