I AM pleased that the landmark Violence Against Women (Wales) Bill was passed earlier this month by the National Assembly for Wales, becoming the first UK legislature to do so. The ‘Cross the Line’ film has been launched to raise awareness of the subtle signs of domestic violence, and has aired on ITV Wales and S4C. If you or someone you know have been affected by domestic violence, the All Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline can offer help and support. They can be contacted on 0808 80 10 800.

Friar’s Walk will be opening its doors on November 12th! This is really exciting news for Newport, and the complex will be a dynamic shopping and leisure destination for our city. If you walk past the development you can see that it is really taking shape, with the external construction and the curved roof structure now in place. The Welsh Government provided £1.5 million to kickstart the development, and I’m really looking forward to using Friar’s Walk when it opens!

Over the coming months, many exciting events will take place in Newport. From May 29-31, the Wales Senior Open will take place at the Celtic Manor, and spectators can purchase early bird tickets by calling 0800 023 2557. On the 14th June, the Velothon Wales will see more than 15,000 cyclists ride through Newport with many of the world’s best cyclists in attendance. For more information about this exciting event and to see what volunteering opportunities are available visit www.velothonwales.co.uk

A consultation on the microchipping of dogs has been launched by the Welsh Government. The decision to introduce compulsory microchipping is just one aspect of the Welsh Government’s work to improve dog welfare, including new standards for licensed dog breeders which come into effect from 30th April.
