I DON’T think there’s many people that haven’t got caught up in Olympic fever over the last couple of weeks.

Ordinarily I am not really a huge fan of sailing, nor have I ever put myself through the rigours of a training regime when it comes to swimming, but I have become captivated by the world of Olympic sport.

Watching team GB excel in a host of different disciplines, from cycling to diving, athletics and tennis, has been really wonderful.

But among all the internationally-renowned stars, the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Jessica Ennis-Hill, one young man from Brynmawr has been flying the flag for Blaenau Gwent.

Newport player Sam Cross has been a regular on the HSBC Sevens World Series and is on a Welsh Rugby Union national contract until 2018.

He missed out on the 2014 Commonwealth Games due to injury but has played 114 matches in the World Series.

To see Sam come away with a silver medal in Rio was a fantastic achievement and what better advocate for Blaenau Gwent on the world stage?

I hope that his achievement will inspire a new generation of young sport stars in Blaenau Gwent.

Well done Sam.

l Ebbw Vale library is now open for business and is already going from strength to strength with 2,500 visitors in the first week, 600 in the first day alone.

It’s great to see the £250,000 Welsh Labour Government’s investment really making a difference in the community and I wish the library every success.

I am holding my next advice surgery there on Friday, September 2 from 10.30-11.30am.

Please feel free to pop in for a chat or call my Brynmawr office on 01495 311160 to make an alternative appointment.
