The Assembly’s children, young people and education committee, chaired by Lynne Neagle, are consulting on the emotional and mental health of children and young people.

The inquiry will focus on whether children and young people are getting the help that they need, as soon as they need it.

The committee hopes to hear from children and young people who have used these services, as well as parents, carers, mental health and educational professionals and people who work with children in care.

  • The Caerleon Festival goes from strength to strength and this year was no exception.

In its 15th year, it is a credit to those volunteers who work tirelessly to organise a wonderful programme of music, literature, arts and theatre with something for everyone.

Along with the mayor, I was pleased to present the Children’s Arts and Creative Writing Awards to pupils from local schools.

Some definite writers of the future. This year’s festival also celebrated the 80th anniversary of the 56 Basque refugees who came to Cambria House in Caerleon fleeing the Spanish Civil War.

At a time of high unemployment and poverty, the people of Caerleon welcomed the children with open arms. We must never forget our proud history of solidarity and generosity to those young refugees fleeing violence 80 years ago.

  •  St Woolos Hospital is home to the Clinical Research and Innovation Centre.

Clinicians and staff take part in ground breaking research and patients are able to access international studies closer to home.

Last week I visited the centre with the cabinet secretary Vaughan Gething AM to speak with patients and staff and to support the announcement of £21 million investment to help develop the treatments of tomorrow.

  •  Pupils, teachers, staff and Governors at John Frost School said farewell to retiring head teacher Jon Wilson this week.

The music and drama department gave a fantastic performance of some of his favourite songs (The Kinks, AC/DC and Jimi Hendrix would be proud of them). The School has the motto ‘Carpe Diem – Seize the Day’ – I’m sure Mr Wilson will enjoy his retirement.

  •  While the Senedd breaks over summer, I will be continuing my regular surgeries in Newport West.
