NEWPORT East AM John Griffiths says a Newport County AFC win in Sunday's playoff final would be " a huge boost for the city."

Mr Griffiths, a lifelong County fan who used to head to the old Somerton Park with his friends growing up in Pill, will be at Wembley on Sunday with his family.

"After a 25 year wait it is going to be a massive game," the Welsh Government minister responsible sport said.

"Sport is really powerful. I think it would have a big impact for Newport going back into the Football League because of how important football is to people and that power it has to bring people together and make them feel good about themselves and their home."

Mr Griffiths admitted it would be a nerve-wracking 90 minutes but said he was full of hope County would get the job done.

And he said the atmosphere at the assembly this week had been good ahead of the all Welsh clash, with Wrexham the other finalists.

"There's been a lot of banter flying around between myself and the North Wales Ams, particularly Lesley Griffiths who is a big Wrexham fan.

"One of us is going to be smiling on Monday."
