A NEWPORT councillor and lifelong Newport County fan will represent the council at Wembley this Saturday.

Labour councillor for Alway John Guy, will attend the FA Trophy final between Newport County and York City in his capacity as deputy mayor.

He will be attending with his wife and deputy mayoress Joyce Guy.

Cllr Guy, 69, who is due to take over as mayor from Margaret Cornelius later this month, has been a keen County supporter for more than 50 years.

The retired policeman started supporting the team when he was in his early teens and stuck with them even when he had to travel around 40 miles to their former groundshare in Gloucestershire.

“It’s the biggest honour of my life to represent the people of Newport at such a momentous sporting occasion,” he said.

“Every sporting enthusiast welcomes the chance to go to Wembley.”

Cllr Guy says he will support County from the Royal Box at Wembley.

“The fact that it’s a local team means you can really support and get to know the players,”

he said.

“With a local side you’ve got more of an investment.”’ Newport County sold more than 11,000 of their 15,000 ticket allocation for the final.
