Brought up in Scotland and Cheltenham, he graduated from Cambridge University, and qualified as a barrister. He has worked as a speech writer for the Liberal Party and in public relations for Texaco, British Telecom and Transport For London. A father-of-three, he has been a St Albans district councillor, and stood as Liberal/SDP Alliance General Election candidate for St Albans in 1983 and 1987.
