MEETING: Addressing the meeting of the Gwent Senior Citizens Forum Newport’s Chair Mrs Shirley Evans stressed the importance placed by the Newport Forum on being a voice of the over 50’s by holding public meetings four times a year, holding an information day each year and tackling current issues effecting the elderly.

The Information Day at the Newport Centre, opened by the Mayor of Newport, gave the 800 attending 104 sources of information including a stall for the four AMs and MPs. The forum receives the full support of Newport City Council, especially Sandra Trimarco our Partnership Officer and Community Connectors who have compiled a massive directory for our age group.throughout Newport from U3A with 400 members to local coffee mornings with a dozen members.

Our current issues we are dealing with are there removal of guards on trains, parking in Friars Walk to enable patients to receive treatment at Specsavers, the cuts in Newport Bus Services, an involvement in the future consultation re-our bus passes, and support for carers.

Between us the forum committee has attended meetings of the Care and Repair Board,The Senate, Carer’s Forum, GAVO, Fairness Commission, Federation of Friendship Centres, Old Persons Pathway Reference Group, Osteoporosis Group, and supported the Ageing Well in Newport Conference.
