BLAENAVON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Mr Roger Bowen reports on the Society’s April meeting:

“A Surgeon in Nelson’s Navy, Mediaeval doctor and Rorkes Drift soldier, Roger Morgan has appeared in many guises in his former presentations to our society.
One of our favourite speakers, and an acknowledged expert in his field, Roger talked this time about advances in Victorian medicine.
A former employee of CADW, in his free time Roger has specialised for decades in meticulously researched presentations on aspects of our past, usually conducted in period costume.

For the April presentation Roger was equipped with a Gladstone Bag filled with medical instruments.

In amusing manner he outlined progress made in pain relief and anaesthesia, the development of everyday items like the stethoscope and the huge leap forward made by the discovery of the properties of X Rays.
Sprinkling his talk with a liberal dose of anecdotes (some of them involving rather black humour) Roger left the packed audience looking forward to his next visit to the society.

We meet on the 2nd Thursday each month at 7pm at Bethlehem Chapel, all welcome, visitors pay £3 on the night.”

CHARLES STREET GREEN: I think that one of the loveliest sights of Spring is the emergence of Daffodils all around Blaenavon.

The array of daffodils in so many sites around our town always cheer me up after the long winter months. Over the years bulbs have been planted by Blaenavon Town Council, T.C.B.Council, BronAfon, Royal British Legion, Schoolchildren of Blaenavon and the Friends of Charles Street Green and other volunteers too.

It is such a shame when all this good work is spoiled by a few and why I was so disappointed recently to see the lovely display on Charles Street Green ruined by vandals.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning the pavements and grassy areas there were scattered with daffodils that had been picked and just thrown on the ground.

Someone somewhere knows who destroyed the display and spoiled so may residents pleasure, I hope that they are proud of themselves!
