TEAROOM: Janet Howells’ Victorian Tearooms, Abergavenny’s favourite traditional cafe, has moved to a new address at 53 Frogmore Street.

Janet has created a unique atmosphere with her home-made cakes and afternoon teas served on fine period bone china. Now she will be able to serve even more customers in the new spacious premises.

Janet has built up a strong following of dedicated customers since opening her tearooms three years ago, yet her decision to choose Abergavenny as her base was born out of a family crisis.

Having run a successful business in Cardiff, Janet gave up work five years ago to care for her father John who had been been diagnosed with throat cancer. John’s subsequent full recovery encouraged Janet to start up the original Victorian Tearooms in Frogmore Street, in May 2014.

For the last two years, she has been chosen as a judge for the Abergavenny Bakeoff.

Janet has been a chef all throughout her working life having trained at catering college in Cardiff and Usk Agricultural College. She honed her baking skills working in London, Spain, France, Tenerife, Barbados, the Dominican Republic and throughout Britain in some of the best hotels.

All of Janet’s cakes are made on the premises and she has a wide choice of teas and coffees from around the world as well as hot snacks.

Her speciality is her afternoon teas with a variety of sandwiches pastries and cakes but, due to high demand, booking is essential as her pastries are made specially for the occasion.
