SEASON: The Black Rock lave net fishery’s season is at its mid-point and the season to date has been quite eventful. Fishing has been difficult with unsuitable weather conditions on the spring tides which we fish.

The catch on July 13 was a very average three salmon, disappointing, as there have been good numbers on the estuary. Several fish have been missed and lots of lessons learnt by the younger element of the group.

On several occasions a seal has been spotted on the fishing grounds, and we think he is certainly having his share of the fish.

Paul Watkins has caught the first salmon of the season and this wins him the Bob Leonard cup to be presented at the fishery open day on August 26.

The fishery remains ever popular with the public and the media with a six page feature in the July/August edition of the Landscape magazine and recent filming by ITV Coast and Country. This will be shown on Friday August 4 and Bob Leonard the association chairman and Matt Fox our youngest member will feature.

A boat trip to Denny Island close to Avonmouth has also been undertaken by the fishermen who made a landing and found several interesting items which will be used in their display at the net house.

As ever visitors are always welcome to watch the fishing and further details can be found at blackrocklavenets.co.uk and Facebook.
