ACHIEVEMENT: Caerphilly council’s highway inspector has been awarded for his commitment and dedication after returning to university.

Darren Jones has worked for Caerphilly council for more than two decades and recently took the plunge to enhance his skills and knowledge by returning to the University of Wales in Pontypridd.

After successfully completing his first year Darren was commended by the university for his high attainment in the Topographical Surveying subject, and was presented with the David Leng Memorial Prize.

The award, which was commissioned after the sudden death of Mr Leng’s son, whilst undertaking his studies at the University of Glamorgan, was presented to Darren by Mr Leng himself during a special awards evening. When presenting the award Mr Leng made reference to the positive attitude that Darren has shown throughout the year, in addition to his fantastic attainment in his first year finals.

During his first year Darren has completed a number of modules which include surveying, maths, hydraulics, site practice and management and thermo-dynamics, subjects that will greater enhance his theory in undertaking his role as a highways inspector. 

Darren commented, “I have surprised myself in how much I have enjoyed returning to education. It has been a challenge to study again in my 40’s but I am looking forward to putting my new found skills into practice.”

Cllr Sean Morgan, cabinet member responsible for economy and infrastructure said, “As an employer we are committed to providing training and development opportunities for staff and supporting them through their learning journey. I would like to extend my congratulations to Darren, returning to education can be a daunting prospect and to have achieved so much in the first year is commendable.”
