YOUTH CAMPS: On Monday July 24 the Rotary Clubs of St Woolos and Newport Uskmouth welcomed sixteen young people from all over the world to Newport.

They were members of a Rotary International camp organised by Cardiff East Rotary Club. The participants came from as far away as America, Taiwan and India as well as Norway, Finland, Germany, Italy and France.

The young people had all flown into Cardiff only three days before but had already become firm friends.

The weather was glorious which was a relief as the first activity of the day was to climb the Transporter Bridge.

After an interesting talk on the history of the bridge by David Hando from the Friends of the Transporter Bridge, they set off on their climb accompanied by some apprehensive, not exactly young, Rotarians.

The whole party walked across it enjoying the panoramic views of Newport. They were joined by four young people from Newport who had been on similar camps in Europe and Norway.

The group then went on to the RSBP  Wetlands Centre where they were given a fascinating guided tour exploring the unique habitat of the Newport Wetlands.

By then they were more than ready for their lunch, enjoyed in the sunshine.

Early afternoon they boarded their coach and headed north to enjoy the hospitality of Brynmawr Rotary Club at Big Pit.

Many thanks to the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge and the staff of Newport Wetlands.

Rotary International organises around 80 Youth Camps each year throughout the world where young people from different countries come together to share activities and build lifelong friendships. These are open to all.
