Busy end of term

10:27am Thursday 24th July 2008

It has been a hectic end of term at Llanvihangel Crucorney Primary School. Following their part in the successful concert at St Michael’s church at the end of June, Years 5 and 6 put on their own concert based on the Ancient Olympics in front of a packed audience in the school hall. On the following day the school’s football team won the schools’ final at the annual Pandy Show. At the end of the same week the annual school fete and barbecue was held which raised nearly £1000. The fete was a wonderful success with many activities taking place such as The Paws for Thought Dog Display team, as seen on Britain’s Got Talent and a Birds of Prey display. The Crucorney Young Farmers came along to organise some Welly Wanging. The head teacher, Kathryn Evans, was thrilled with the support from all school members and the local community and would like to thank them for their efforts.

Literary bus tour

Last Saturday I took part in a day organised by the Welsh Academy, Yr Academi Gymreig. It was the first of a series of three days organised by the Academy, which is the Welsh National Literature Promotion Agency and Society for Authors. They chose Pandy because of its most famous son Raymond Williams (1921-1988) who attended the local primary school and King Henry VIII Grammar School for Boys in Abergavenny. He won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. He went on to teach at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and became Professor of Drama at Cambridge. He wrote many books, selling over 750,000 copies of them in the UK alone, and established a world-wide reputation as an academic, novelist and critic.

Success for Pandy Show

9:47am Thursday 17th July 2008

This year's Pandy Show at Blaengavenny Farm Llanvihangel Crucorney enjoyed better weather and attendances than last year's event. The continued collaboration between the committees of the Show and of the Vintage Rally proved to be very successful once again. Show Chairman Terry Bayliss estimated that nearly £5000 had been raised for Ty Hafan, the Children's Hospice for Wales, and other local charities. Entries were up for many of the competitions. A particular highlight of the event was the competition for the winning Ploughing Match National Vintage Tractor and Engine club for 2008. The winning team was Ralph Homer ( the individual highest points scorer) Ian Ferguson (Ferguson class), Graham Deakin (vintage trailer class), Mike Powell (walk behind), Fred Jones and Terry Bayliss (vintage hydraulics) Committee members have received a very positive reaction to this year's event. However Terry Bayliss appealed for more local volunteers to join the small Show committee.
