SWIMMING: Second annual 50-plus Swim The Channel Challenge.

This was held at the swimming pool at Newport International Sports Village. This was again well attended, with participants swimming further than they expected. One of our local senior citizen residents, namely Second World War army captain Ralph Diaper, set a fine example by swimming 92 lengths, which is a distance of one and a half miles.

All those who took part were presented with Silver Level Going for Gold Challenge Certificates and T- shirts by the mayor, Allan Morris.

Participants came from all across Newport and surrounding areas and ranged in ability levels, many of whom attend some of Newport city council's regular 50-plus aqua aerobics classes.

Swimming and aquatic activities such as aqua aerobics provide excellent all-over body workouts, which in comparison to other forms of exercise are easy on the joints as the water takes the strain.
