TREDEGAR Town Council’s annual visit to the T2520 Bomber crash site at Cefn yr Ystrad, Trefil, will take place on Saturday November 10.

The wreath laying service will take place to remember the six servicemen who died in a plane crash at the site during the Second World War.

In December 1940, six young men set out from RAF Marham in their Wellington Bomber for Bordeaux, France.

The raid was a success and several targets were hit. On their return, Bomber T2520 experienced bad weather and thick cloud and was separated from the rest of the squadron.

The aircraft’s basic and primitive instruments led them off course and running low on fuel, they began their descent.

But instead of being over the lowlands of East Anglia they were heading towards the Brecon Beacons. The flight ended on December 9 at 3.12am on the rocky outcrop of Cefn yr Ystrad to the north of Trefil village. There were no survivors.

Those who died were Sergeant David Ernest Wallace, Sergeant Reginald Brown, Sergeant Stanley Gordon Howard, Sergeant Hylton Daniel Ellis, Sergeant Pilot David Mills and Pilot Officer Albert Tindall.

The group will meet at Top House, Trefil at 10am for the short but strenuous walk to the cairn for a short wreath laying ceremony. Everyone is welcome, but you should have a reasonable level of mobility and fitness.
