A COUNCILLOR hit out at the decision to carry out gas mains replacement work in Chepstow on Remembrance Sunday.

Wales and West Utilities plan to close Hardwick Terrace from November 3-5 and the 10-12.

Councillor Phil Hobson said to be working on such an important day, November 11, is not ideal.

"You would think they would plan round this. It's not on is it?" he told members at last week's Chepstow Town Council meeting.

He said it could cause problems when the silence is observed as a tribute to fallen soldiers after the laying of wreaths at about 10.30am.

"Can you imagine if a drill is going at that time there is going to be uproar," he said.

"For a couple of days of a year they don't have to do these things."

The closure of Hardwick Terrace means buses will be diverted to the roundabout by the racecourse, travel along Welsh Street and back to the bus station.

Some councillors were also unhappy the Royal British Legion decided to observe the silence before 11am.

Cllr Ned Hayward said a meeting was held with the RBL about five years ago but added it has always been the policy in the town.

Platoons taking part in the Remembrance parade are due to meet at Welsh Street car park at 10am, march at 10.15am and lay wreaths at the cenotaph around five minutes later.

The two minutes silence is then to be observed before all participants head to St Mary's Church for a service.

Cllr Hilary Beech and the mayor Cllr Paul Rutter said they wanted their concerns to be noted that Chepstow is different to most places on the matter.
