A FRIEND of a woman who lost her brave battle with cancer aged just 26 has smashed a fundraising target in her memory.

Kind locals, businesses, together with friends and family have helped Peter Green to raise £5,564 in just five months.

Mr Green, 33, hoped to raise £2,500 for Marie Curie by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro next June, as a tribute to Laura Marshall Reid, who died in January 2011.

But the Rogiet mum of two’s tragic story touched people’s hearts and the funds soon came flooding in.

After an article appeared in the Free Press and its sister paper, the Argus, Mr Green was contacted by a representative from Lewis Civil Engineering, who pledged to match the £2,500 target.

On November 17, Mr Green held an open mic night at Rogiet Non Political Club, where around 20 people took to the stage.

A total of £1,225 was raised, which, added to other donations and the engineering company’s money, took the overall amount to £5,564.
