POLICE were called to the Royal Gwent Hospital nearly 250 times in just under two years.

The majority were made by staff following verbal abuse, assault, violence or disruption by patients or visitors while they were doing their job.

The information was received by the Argus following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Figures for January 2011 to November 2012 show police officers attended the Royal Gwent 238 times.

In the last two years, the Health Board, police and Crown Prosecution Service have worked together to achieve 31 prosecutions, ten formal cautions, one fixed penalty notice and one ASBO against patients and visitors who were violent or aggressive to Health Board staff.

81 of the calls from the Royal Gwent followed verbal abuse or disruption, 67 after physical abuse, assault or violence, 24 after aggressive outbursts and 20 followed inappropriate behaviour.

The overall figure is nearly four times as many as Nevill Hall, where officers attended 52 times in the year.

Other hospitals serving Gwent patients made less calls, 38 at St Cadoc's, 24 at County Hospital and Llanfrechfa, 28 at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr and 21 at Ty Sirhowy.

The rest of the list was made up of 15 calls from Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, 9 from St Woolos and 3 from the Caerphilly Miners Hospital which has shut.

A spokesman for the Health Board said it works hard to prosecute offenders at its hospitals and this will continue to be the case.

"We fully accept that tensions often run high in high pressure hospital environments, but our hospital and security staff link closely with local police at all times," he said.

"Aneurin Bevan Health Board operates a zero tolerance policy towards any violent or aggressive behaviour and we will always work with the police to bring about successful prosecutions where this is appropriate."

The offenders should be locked up and then up in front of the Judge first thing (If it's a Fri night - bit of bad luck for them) He then charges them £250, and they remain in custody until it's paid by a friend or family member. That should send the message out.

Can't the staff have a security guy who can fire a dart and put them to sleep, you know like vets have done on farms and zoo's, after all they sound like wild animal's, then when they wake up but now in cuff's, the nice doctor can ask them what is the problem ????.

No they cannot. We live in a country that does not treat its population that way. If you want cruel and unusual punishment then I suggest you go to Somalia.

Yet we live in a country that allows these morons to treat its doctors and nurses in this way. Don't they have the right to work in civilised conditions?

Well, if people insist on acting like animals, why not ? At he least the should be denied treatment, I can't understand the mentality of people attending an Hospital to then attack those who are trying to help them. Often the fists are flying and the level of shouted obscenity is totally unacceptable, where were these people brought up ? I don't think any employee is paid to stand there and take that.

Yep, but the walk back with a violent, abusive, spitting drunk who has already possibly smashed a nurse in the face just because she or her is trying to do their job is going to take a great deal longer than 2 minutes. Would you be stupid enough to do this without some form of secure transport?

I agree shot them with a bullet to kill them not a dart to put them a sleep the people who work at these location's should do without fear pond life abusing them or assaulting them and these people are hard working people so yes we live in a society where we can't shot them but they should not be allowed treatment on the NHS anywhere in the UK something needs to be done to stop this behaviour and NOW.

In my experience there's very little difference between the Custody Suite at Newport Central and A&E at RGH on a Friday and Saturday night. It's the same intoxicated pond dwelling paracites offering the same verbal abuse and physical violence with no thought for the normal people who are attempting to provide care, in the case of the nurse, and control, in the case of the police officer. Scum

agree with gordelpus, these scum blight all of us decent people. had to take my daughter there one boxing day and had to tell some idiot who seemed to think that using the f word all the time was normal.he was with some woman who had a cut on her cheek and was also really drunk, so we all had to put up with morons, if that drunk just dont let them in the door until they are sober enouth to behave in a decent manor.we are to soft on the xxxxwits in this country,,
