Body found in Newport: Missing Penelope Elliott's family informed
THE FAMILY of a Newport grandmother who went missing last week have been told by police that a body has been found in the city.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said that officers found the body of a woman on waste ground close to the Kingsway Centre car park at around 9.30am yesterday.
The woman had not been formally identified last night, but the family of missing Newport grandmother Penelope Elliott, 63, have been informed and support is being provided to them, a police spokesman said.
Scenes of crime officers were seen at the area, which is near a set of steps to John Frost Square, yesterday morning.
The incident was not being treated as suspicious, the spokesman added.
Police appealed for help to find Mrs Elliott, of Cromwell Road and who was last seen on Glebe Street, Maindee, at 9.55am on January 3, on Friday.
That day she and her husband Carl Elliott, 67, left their Cromwell Road home to go for a walk and stopped at Greggs bakery to buy bread.
Mr Elliot went into the store and left his wife outside but when he returned a minute later she was gone.
No one had seen or heard from her since. She had no handbag, money or phone with her.
Friends and family had been out looking for Ms Elliot and had placed posters in shops, pubs and on lamposts in the area.
Flyers were also given out at Newport County's game with Wrexham on Friday and an announcement was made at half time, as both Mr Elliot and his son are club fans.
