Oakdale man denies molesting two girls in the 80s and 90s

A MAN has denied indecently assaulting two girls during the 1980s and 1990s.

Vernon Cleverly, 58, of Llwyn-on Crescent, Oakdale, uncle of Welsh boxing champion Nathan Cleverly is on trial at Cardiff Crown Court this week after he denied six charges of indecent assault, allegedly dating from 1983 to 2001. Susan Ferrier, prosecuting, said the complainants – who had never met before the trial – were both young girls when the alleged abuse took place.

The first woman claimed Cleverly would lie on top of her and touch her after inviting her to look at a teddy bear, and that she should keep it a secret.

In recorded evidence she said she would lie there and cry, and wanted it to stop.

“It has destroyed my whole life,” she said.

The second woman told police Cleverly touched her, kissed her and made her touch him, the court heard.

Later, when the second woman reported allegations to police after she saw Cleverly at a partyin Cardiff, officers were led to the first alleged victim.

The defendant was arrested and interviewed, and emphatically denied anything sexual took place, said Mrs Ferrier.

The trial continues.
