A SPONSORED kickathon in Newport is set to raise more than £2,000 for a severely disabled youngster who needs specialist equipment.

Members of the Newport School of Tae Kwon-Do collected £1,952.83 for Casey’s Cause, a charity set up by the parents of 15-month-old Casey Hard, from Coedkernew, who became severely brain- damaged during a difficult birth in 2011.

Master Philip Burley, from Newport School of Tae Kwon- Do, presented Casey’s parents, Nahella and Anthony, and his older sister, Reagan, with a cheque this week.

Members managed more than 1,000 kicks per hour, with more than 50 club members taking part. Higher personal targets were set by some senior black belts, with Lewis Barton beating Abigail Hobson to smash the current club record.

Participants relinquished their doboks and opted for pyjamas and onesies, and some seniors decided to put themselves through a 60- minute continuous sparring session instead of kicking.

The session ended with the club’s own version of the Harlem Shake to help raise awareness of Casey’s Cause.

With sponsorship money still to come in, the total raised is expected to exceed £2,000. Visit www.newporttkd.co.uk for more information.
