A BALLET group has used Welsh clogging in its latest production to promote the ancient style of dance.
Ballet Cymru, Coreo Cymru and The Riverfront have worked together to produce a Wales-based performance of Romeo and Juliet.
Assistant artistic director at Ballet Cymru, Amy Doughty, of Newport, said the clogging is used only once, set to Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights.
With a wooden sole and a metal toe cap, the clog is in stark contrast to the shoes ballet dancers normally use.
“To use this is not a natural fit for a ballet company,”
Mrs Doughty said. “Clogging has very different gravity, it is a lot of stamping.”
With the help of professional Welsh clogger Huw Williams, the company has been learning the technique since last October.
The show is on May 3 and 4, at 7.30pm, at The Riverfront in Newport
