THE Cwmbran Nidus Children’s Choir is celebrating after success on Welsh soil and abroad.

The group’s new show choir called Ysbrydoliaeth, which is Welsh for inspiration, won the Show Choir of the World 2013 competition at this year’s Llangollen International Eisteddfod with their own medley from Sweeney Todd.

The children were also requested to perform The Happy Wanderer in German, which was made internationally famous by the Obernkirchen Children’s Choir in 1953 - and became a hit record.

To celebrate the 60-year anniversary since the talented group of war orphans travelled from Germany to Llangollen to try to raise money for their orphanage, two of the original choir returned to the Eisteddfod to watch the children perform. Ursel Gaussman and Inge Volkening were both 14 when they sang at the Eisteddfod.

The choir was selected after the musical director of the event picked them from two days worth of choir video entries.

Nidus volunteer Heidi Nicholson said: "It was a huge honour to be chosen and the performance received rapturous applause from the huge audience."

She explained that following the concert Nidus Choir’s conductor, Christian Jenkins, 21, spoke to the two ladies from the Obernkirchen choir, who said they’d thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

The choir also had entries in the Folk Choir and the Senior Children’s Choir.

The children won their prelim for the senior children’s choir after performing Goodall’s The Lord is My Shepherd and Rutter’s ‘Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day’. In the Folk Choir category the children performed Si Hei Lwli unaccompanied and Clychau Aberdyfi, receiving a score of 85%. The Nidus Children’s Choir was formed six years ago, and next year sees the choir travelling to the 2014 World Choir Games.

The choir are now recruiting children aged eight to 17 years, anyone interested should contact heidi@nidustheatrearts.co.uk or visit www.niduschildrenschoir.co.uk
