Newport armour plant to open
6:30am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Gwent news
The official opening of a plant designing and producing body and vehicle armour in Newport will take place tomorrow.
Funded by the Ministry of Defence and Kennametal Manufacturing Ltd, the £2 million centre will be the largest in Europe and will help to sustain 50 jobs locally.
This will be the UK’s first advanced ceramic armour design and production plant, developing “enhanced ceramic materials” for both armoured fighting vehicles and body armour. This should help reduce the reliance on imports of armour.
Body armour containing ceramic ballistic plates is already in use protecting UK forces on operations, and the centre will develop armour components large enough for full scale impact tests to improve the technology.
The new plant is situated on Leeway Industrial Estate in Nash, Newport. Its opening will see Newport become the UK’s centre for advanced military technology.
After the plant was announced in September, Philip Dunne, minister for defence equipment, support and technology, said: “I am pleased that this investment in a state-of-the art facility in South Wales, the largest in Europe, will further advance the United Kingdom’s freedom of action in advanced ceramic armour.”
