A BRYNMAWR barber has been named Welsh Barber of the Year in a national award competition.

Amber Watson, 21, owner of Amber's Barbers, was awarded Welsh Barber of the Year 2013 in a competition run by the National Federation of Hairdressers, while Alice Hill-Jones, also of Amber's Barbers, was awarded Welsh Apprentice Barber of the Year 2013.

Ambers Barber's opened just 10 months ago, when Ms Watson was 20, and the awards were given based on client recognition.

The inaugural awards aims to give recognition to hairdressers, barbers, salon teams and other industry professionals in Wales.The event was held by the NHF on Sunday evening at the Cardiff Masonic Hall and hosted by NHF President Carl Hinder.

Ms Watson said: "We were really pleased to win. I think it comes down to providing excellent customer service, making everyone feel welcome and ensuring they feel they and come back again and again

"I opened up the barbers because I waned to do something for myself. This shop came up and I already had a solid clientèle from home visits and when I worked for someone else. So I decided to make something of myself, and here we are today."

Ms Watson was presented with her award by representatives from suppliers Barber Blades.

The inaugural awards were linked with Cardiff Fashion Week.
