Newport Greenpeace activist Anthony Perrett is first to get exit visa

NEWPORT Greenpeace activist, Anthony Perrett is the first of the Arctic 30 to be issued with an exit visa.

This morning, Greenpeace have confirmed Mr Perrett has today been given a visa in his passport from the Federal Migration Service allowing him to leave the country.

Mr Perrett who is the first to be given a visa, said: “This was the final step. I’ll be leaving for home in Wales as soon as possible now, extremely proud of what I did three months ago.

"We took peaceful action to defend a part of the world that is the heartbeat of our climate. The Arctic is a measure of our planet’s health and I refuse to stay silent as the oil companies line up to profit from its destruction."

The non-Russian members of the Arctic 30 are expected to leave Russia over the coming days.

Twenty-eight activists and two journalists were arrested in September and charged with hooliganism as they staged a protest at a Gazprom Russian offshore oil rig. The crew were held in custody for two months before being released.

Mr Perrett, 32, was also the first of the activists to have charges against him dropped by the Russian authorities on Tuesday.

The ex-Caldicot councillor had told BBC Radio Wales he would spend Christmas in St Petersburg and then had five days to leave the country. He said his partner, Zaharah Ally, also of Newport, would join him for Christmas.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "So from Thursday I will have five days in which to exit Russia."

A real leader would have sent in the SAS long before now to bust these hostages out of dank cell that such terrorists were holding British citizens in. Putin feels nothing but contempt for Cameron and the rest of the spineless MPs at Westminster who don't even have the guts to not wear a tie to work everyday, let alone stand up for their country folk that they are supposed to represent.

Fact is, Putin's on a PR campaign ahead of the Sochi Olympics. Grand gestures like this - along with releasing Khodorovksy and **** Riot - are merely empty and fake. Like another dictator similar to him - Adolf Hitler during the 1936 Berlin Olympics - he is keen to present a false image of himself as a reasonable person to the rest of the world. Yet, also similar to Hitler his discriminatory set of laws against certain minority groups within the country he governs are still very much active and doing horrific damage to the many unfortunate victims whom he has decided to scapegoat. In Nazi Germany's case in 1936 it was the Jews, Roma and LGBTQ communities. In Putin's Russia's case in 2013 it is again the LGBTQ community. It seems LGBTQ people are regarded as low priority today as world leaders regarded the millions of Jewish people whom they denied refuge to prior to the tragedy of the holocaust. Now the same mistakes are being made over again - not that cynical politicians care as they're only in politics for themselves and not to make the world a better place.

Once again, 'our' spineless parasitic politicians who govern us (and it has to be said shamelessly exploit us) are appeasing a dangerous dictator (i.e. Fuhrer Putin) who is mercilessly persecuting Russia's LGBTQ population and is currently holding Europe to ransom - via control of gas utilities (ever wondered why your bills are just getting higher and higher? answer: Putin and his very illegitimate 'business associates' - if you get my drift;) If they had been true freedom loving, genuine democrats the leaders of the world would have boycotted Sochi. The fact that they did not tells us one thing: they have to go - unfortunately, since they themselves seem to have suspended the democratic process the people need to do this, summarily as per on-the-street democracy eastern bloc style circa 1989.

Katie clearly has an Hollywood grasp of things military. Apparently you can just pop over to Russia, completely undetected, snatch 30 people from various jails, silence the jailors , amble out with all of the 'hostages' and just fly back to Britain still undetected. Maybe if we could just get Bruce Willis on board.......
