A WARNING has been issued for Newport as Wales braces for the highest tide to hit the country since 1997.

Natural Resources Wales warns high tides combined with forecast gale force winds could see a storm surge that would raise the level of the sea by up to a metre above high tide. This surge could cause overtopping of defences in places.

While the threat extends along the entire Welsh coastline, Natural Resources Wales said Crindau in Newport along with parts of West and North Wales are particularly at risk.

The A466 in Tintern will be closed from around 8.40am and 9.45am tomorrow as high tide for the River Wye is expected around this time.

The road will be closed for around 20 minutes before and 20 minutes after the tide reaching its peak tomorrow.

The road will be blocked with lorries and because the closure is for a relatively short period no diversions will be in place.

The lorries are normally placed just north of the Royal George Hotel and by the Wye Valley Hotel.
